The New Faces curriculum is divided into five units. Within each unit you will find modules that contain individual lesson plans. The lessons have been constructed so that they can be easily adapted to fit the needs of youth and adult learners. Most of the lessons incorporate video clips from documentaries. A free DVD of the clips is available to teachers and non-profit organizations in North Carolina. The video clips can also be viewed online. To encourage use by classroom teachers, we have aligned the lessons with curriculum standards from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for many classes within 8th to 12th grade Social Studies, Language Arts and Technology.
Unit 1: Globalization, Migration and Latinos in North Carolina
|
In Unit 1 learners will share their personal and family stories of migration or movement. They will discuss social, historical, and economic factors that cause migration, including forced migration and displacement. They will explore relationships between migration histories in the U.S. and current stories of Latinos coming to North Carolina. Finally they will develop an understanding that not all Latinos in North Carolina are current immigrants, documented or undocumented. Latino family histories span generations in this state.
