Carolina Public Humanities screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898
Tuesday, 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
October 21, 2025
Join Carolina Public Humanities for a film screening and community discussion co-curated by CPH and Carolina K-12.
This PBS documentary tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898—the only coup d’état in the history of the US. CPH and Carolina K-12 are proud to partner with the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Working Films and Durham’s historic Carolina Theatre to present a public screening and community conversation featuring K-12 educators.
Panelists Include:
The Honorable Leonardo Williams, Mayor of Durham
Antwain Hunter, Assistant Professor of History
